Over the past five years, President Mark Hanley reported, the Carmichaels Borough Council has worked steadily to strengthen community connections and create a welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and local businesses. That effort can be seen in both the appearance of the borough and the pride residents have in calling Carmichaels home.
The Council includes president, Mark Hanley; vice president, Ralph Ewart; secretary/treasurer, Linda Metz and members Joyce Fortney, David Antonini, and Susan Samek. Jeff Hathaway serves as mayor.
One example of that dedication is the recent hiring of part-time maintenance worker George Chahl, who is known for finding ways to keep the borough clean and ensure repairs stay up to date. His work has quickly made him a valued asset to the community and reflects the borough’s ongoing commitment to making Carmichaels a better place to live and do business.
That same commitment was especially evident after a major water leak during the Christmas weekend of 2023 caused broken pipes and extensive flooding inside the borough building. The damage was significant, but the building was ultimately gutted and fully restored by Kennedy Construction of Amity, marking an important step forward in the borough’s recovery.
Council members are proud of how far the borough has come. Their shared mission is to make residents feel comfortable, supported, and confident that the borough is there to serve them. As Metz put it, “Our door is always open to assist.” Her efforts to connect with residents and business owners throughout town have helped bring a renewed spirit of community to Carmichaels.
That spirit is also visible in the borough building itself, which has been beautifully decorated in honor of the America 250 celebration. Local artist Melody Longstreth created and installed the window designs, while a Christmas tree glows with red, white, and blue lights.
A bold, new “Welcome to Carmichaels Borough” sign has been installed in front of the building. Easily visible to passersby, the sign was designed by council members Ewart and Metz to celebrate local Blue & Gold pride.
The council will also sponsor a decorating contest for business owners and residents as part of the 250th celebration, the winners will receive lunch compliments of the borough. For more information, residents are encouraged to contact Linda Metz at 724-966-5506.
The borough is also partnering with the Greene County Chamber of Commerce on a variety of opportunities to promote the area. Stop by the office to get information on what will be available.
One of the upcoming events is a service honoring veterans, which is scheduled for July 4, at 2:00 p.m. at the “Town Square” followed by a celebration at Wana B Park. This event is being coordinated by “United We Shine”, a non-profit organization. There will be food, music, and fun activities for all.
