The observances of our country’s 250th Birthday Celebration will include parades, fireworks, and parties by multiple municipal, community, club, and neighborhood organizations. While these are all wonderful ways to celebrate this momentous occasion, perhaps one more should be added to our holiday calendar.

In 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail about our Independence Day. He noted, in addition to the “pomp and parade,” the celebration “ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”

In keeping with this sentiment, a county-wide worship service will be held in Roberts Chapel on the campus of Waynesburg University on July 5. The event is titled: “A Celebration of Faith, Praise, and Thanksgiving.”

The service will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will feature 18th century hymns and relevant scripture readings and prayers.

The planning committee consists of Greene County Commissioner Jared Edgreen, Waynesburg University President Doug Lee, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Stratton, Rev. Dr. Donald P. Wilson, and organist Ferd Dolfi.

Everyone is cordially invited to this service of community celebration and thanks.
