Summer Movies Come Roaring Back

For those who wondered whether movie theaters had become an endangered species, this summer offered a pretty convincing answer. Not yet.

After years of streaming services and audiences becoming accustomed to watching new movies from the living-room couch, movie theaters suddenly became one of the busiest places in town again. The 2026 summer box office has topped $4 billion, making it one of the strongest post-pandemic summers and putting it on pace to rival the best summers before COVID-19.

Movies such as Toy Story 5, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day have turned moviegoing into an event again. Spider-Man alone has become a phenomenal box-office success, while The Odyssey has demonstrated that audiences will still turn out in huge numbers for a movie that promises something bigger than a television screen can provide.

Even smaller movies have joined the party. Horror films and other unexpected hits have shown that audiences aren’t interested only in familiar superheroes and sequels. Sometimes they want to be surprised.

There is also the theater itself. Movie houses have spent years reinventing the experience, replacing the old, straight-backed seats with oversized recliners, extra legroom and seats that practically invite you to settle in for the evening.

Many theaters now even offer heated or reserved seating, larger screens, improved sound systems and upgraded concessions that go well beyond popcorn and a box of candy. Some even bring food and drinks directly to your seat.

When the chair is comfortable enough to make you forget you paid to sit in it, the movie suddenly seems even better.

There is, however, a little fine print. Higher ticket prices, premium IMAX screenings and more expensive concessions mean box-office dollars are rising faster than attendance. In fact, overall attendance remains below 2019 levels.

Still, this summer has proved something important: People haven’t forgotten the magic of going to the movies. There is something different about sitting in a dark theater with a crowd, hearing everyone laugh, gasp or cheer at the same time. For a few hours, at least, the couch lost its advantage.
