On a day when communities across America paused to celebrate the nation’s history, Sharing the Spirit of America offered a unique reminder that the story of the United States is built not only on historic moments, but on the people who continue to carry those moments forward.

In Greene County, it is people such as the members of the Fort Jackson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution who carry on the legacy. The group hosted a special Reading of the Declaration of Independence at Greene County Veterans Memorial Park on July 8, as part of the nationwide initiative. Local radio personality Doug Wilson was given the honor of reading the document to the large crowd in attendance.

The event commemorated the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence when it was read aloud to citizens throughout the colonies.

At 6:00 p.m. (EDT), communities across all 50 states and U.S. territories read the Declaration together, symbolically connecting Americans from coast to coast in a shared moment of patriotism and remembrance. Guests of all ages attended this inspiring community gathering and experienced a once-in-a-generation celebration of America’s spirit.

While the Declaration was adopted on July 4, it was several days later that ordinary citizens first heard its powerful words read aloud in public gatherings. The words written more than two centuries ago continue to find meaning wherever neighbors gather.

Beyond the ceremony itself, the program served as an invitation to listen, reflect, and appreciate the shared experiences that connect Americans across generations. It was a reminder that patriotism is not simply found in remembering the past, but in understanding the responsibilities that come with a true understanding of the principles upon which the nation was founded.

Members of the Fort Jackson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution hosted the Sharing the Spirit of America program at Veterans Park. They are gathered in front of the Revolutionary War Heroes Monument, the group presented to the county. Members include: (L-R) Jim Willis, John Mariner, Doug Willis, Don King, Lawrence Headley, David Ricciuti (President), Doug Wilson (Presenter), Rodney Grimes, Willie Wilson, Jim Hixon, Rich Menhart, and David Hixon.
