Since 2002, Carmichaels has honored the victims and heroes of the September 11 attacks every year with a Remembrance Ceremony on the town square.
This years’ program will begin on that solemn date at precisely 8:46 a.m. with the sounding of the fire whistle marking the exact time the first plane hit the World Trade Center.
The ceremony started when former Carmichaels Boro Secretary, Mary Lewis contacted the Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company and the American Legion Post 400 to form a committee to plan the remembrance each year.
This year’s featured speaker is Mr. Tim Solobay, former Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner, and former member of the PA House of Representatives and the PA State Senate. He is currently the Fire Chief of Canonsburg VFD.
“A Fireman’s Prayer” will be read, followed by the ringing of the bell for the last call of a fireman. “Tears of a Cop” will be read by the police department. Musical selections will be performed by the Carmichaels Area Band and the American Legion Post 400 Band.
Finally, a 21-gun salute provided by the American Legion will pay tribute to the fallen.
