The Jackie Fedorko Marisa Medical Scholarship for Waynesburg University was recently established by Mrs. Marisa, her son, Kurt Marisa, and her daughter, Autumn Marisa Lexer at the Community Foundation of Greene County (CFGC). Upon being fully endowed, this fund will provide a scholarship to one high school senior who graduates from a Greene County public school, plans to attend Waynesburg University, and major in a medical field (Pre-Med, Nursing, Athletic Training, etc.).
Marisa was born and raised in the coal town of Moffitt along the Monongahela River and graduated from Mapletown High School. She desires to make a difference in her beloved home of Greene County.
The scholarship was established by her family to honor Jackie’s long-time commitment to health and medicine in the county, which included 10 years as a nurse at Greene County Memorial Hospital. In addition, she was the school nurse for Waynesburg Central High School for 30 years, where she impacted the lives of thousands of students and residents.
Jackie and her husband, the late Rudy Marisa of Waynesburg University basketball fame, have five children that grew up in Greene County and were graduates of Waynesburg Central High School.
The recipient will be selected by the CFGC scholarship selection committee. Since this scholarship will be endowed in the future, it will live into perpetuity. The Community Foundation of Greene County will manage and invest the funds in its restricted endowment pool and distribute approximately $1,000 annually.
