Public Service Profile: Cups of Kindness

By Lauren Bertovich

It’s been almost 15 years since Servant Song was established as an ecumenical, collaborative ministry of Christians all sharing the same goal, to serve God through fostering the betterment of humankind. Servant Song Ministries offers individuals and groups the opportunity to disconnect from the chaotic ruts of this modern world and seek inner peace, renew their relationship with God, and hear his guiding voice more clearly.

The primary objective of Servant Song Ministries and its volunteers is to follow and carry out the Gospel mission and message on earth.  It is a unique non-profit organization, led by an all-volunteer team, and relies heavily on public support of material/financial donations, and volunteers to join as partners in life-giving work. In addition to offering directed, guided, and private/group spiritual retreats and weekly Communion Services/healing prayer, they offer community outreach programs such as “Cups-of-Kindness.”

Cups-of-Kindness provides gift cups filled with “take home” mini-meals of nourishment for those in need.  Since its beginning in 2007, Servant Song has prepared more than 7500 cups. The cups are filled with tasty, nutritious breakfast and lunch mini meals that are available at Saint Ann’s Soup Kitchen.  Both begin with Eco-friendly cups. In colder seasons, packets of hot apple cider/hot cocoa mix are included; a 100% juice drink  is included when it’s warm.  The breakfast cups are filled with their own recipe of cinnamon oatmeal cereal, raisins, a breakfast bar, and applesauce.  Lunch is chicken and rice, or potato soup, saltine crackers, canned white chicken or ham, cookie, fruit or pudding cup.  Holiday times include extra treats. Each cup/additions is packaged in a clear gift bag tied with ribbon, with a small gift card including instructions for meal prep, a Scripture verse, and a note about passing acts of kindness on to others. The cups are available to any who may need them at St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen beginning the 3rd Thursday of each month.

Servant Song Ministries in located at 720 East Greene Street in Waynesburg, Pa. On the property are two retreat houses– a large Victorian home, and “Burning Bush,” a small cottage.  Tucked behind the homes are prayer and meditation gardens, a true place of serenity.  It is easy to imagine sitting barefoot in the grass, enjoying a moment of clarity, or seeking shelter under the roof of a small but inviting gazebo to watch the rain or snow.

Sometimes we find ourselves trying our best but simply not knowing what choices to make or path to follow and we fall stagnant. Maybe our family bonds need strengthened or our sanity and purpose restored.  If any of this sounds familiar, consider scheduling a retreat.  Servant Song Ministries has assisted people from as far as Italy and China deepen their relationship with the God of their understanding. If you would like to learn more about the spiritual guidance and retreats offered at Servant Song Ministries you may call or visit them at one of their weekly services. Every Wednesday at 11:00am there is a Communion Service open to all followed with healing prayer.

If you are interested in scheduling a retreat, volunteering or donating please contact Donna Koller at (724)852-2133.  More information is available at their website www.servantsongministries.org and donations are also accepted graciously by mail.
