The community enjoyed a free concert on June 29th in celebration of our country’s 250th birthday and the 14th birthday of Second Sam 9.
Sandy Lusco Huffman and Bob Podish performed beautiful melodies and moving songs on the lawn of the former St. George’s church (now home to Second Sam 9) for two hours much to the delight of those in attendance. Rick Headlee joined Huffman on stage for an encore of “How Great Thou Art” The concert was made possible through a grant from Greene County Tourism and was coordinated by Program Director Julie D’Eletto.
Second Sam 9 runs a faith-based program for adults with developmental disabilities. It was developed by dedicated individuals who envisioned a program to meet the needs of their clients. The program provides social time, life skills training, pre-vocational activities, music and crafts, Bible lessons and community outings to participants at no cost.
This program does not receive government funding and relies entirely upon the generous support of individuals, groups, churches, organizations and corporate sponsors.
The group’s foundational principles are from the Old Testament book 2nd Samuel – specifically, that everyone is equal in God’s sight and has unique gifts to share.
Second Sam Nine began in a rented space at WWJD on the west side of Waynesburg. Throughout its history, gatherings were held in the First Methodist Church and other public places. In 2021, Second Sam 9 purchased their current site.
“The concert served as a way to give thanks to God and those who have supported Second Sam 9 throughout our journey,” remarked co-founder Scott Roberts. “We are extremely grateful for God’s provision and for the many donors and volunteers. It’s been an amazing faith building experience to see how God supplies all our needs.”
The Second Sam 9 Board is made up of Scott as the President. His wife Teresa is the Secretary. Deborah Crouse is the Treasurer. Other board members are Lauren Schaefer, Reverend Jacob Judy, Elaine Williamson and Julie D’Eletto.
Rachel Williamson added, “The concert was engaging and fun even if it was hot out. The pizza came from my favorite place, Scotty’s. Friends had fun, listened to music and enjoyed ice cream from Coolies Skoolie’s as a cool down.”
