For 27 years, Nikki Gasti’s name stood alone atop the Lady Mike’s record book. Now it shares the page with her daughter. The numbers may have changed, but the story remains the same. It features a Carmichaels pitcher, a fierce competitor, and a family legacy written one strikeout at a time.
This season, Bailey Barnyak became the all-time strikeout leader in Carmichaels’ softball history (868), eclipsing the school record previously held by her mother (850). The achievement added a unique and emotional chapter to the storied tradition of Carmichaels softball, connecting two generations through a shared love of the game.
Known for her poise in the circle, pinpoint control, and ability to rise to the occasion in big games, Bailey steadily climbed the record book throughout her career. As the strikeouts accumulated, anticipation grew around the community, with teammates, family members, and fans eager to witness the milestone.
When the record finally fell, it was a moment that celebrated more than individual accomplishment. It reflected years of dedication, countless hours of practice, and the support of a family deeply rooted in Carmichaels athletics. Rather than taking anything away from her mother’s legacy, Bailey’s achievement strengthened it, creating a rare family connection that will stand for generations.
In a program known for producing champions, Barnyak’s record-breaking performance has secured her place among the greatest players ever to wear a Lady Mikes uniform.
In her senior season, she posted a 0.44 ERA with 240 strikeouts while also leading the team offensively with a .484 batting average.
It was no doubt tough to follow an act like Nikki (Gasti) Onderko, who led the Lady Mikes to WPIAL championships in 1997 and 1998 and the school’s first-ever PIAA team state championship in 1998. However, her daughter extended the family legacy with the fierce resolve one would expect of such a lineage.
Now that Bailey’s high school career is over, the strikeout totals will just be numbers. What will endure is the story behind them—a mother and daughter connected by talent, determination, and a love for the game that helped define an extended era of Carmichaels softball.
