Six Miles – Greensboro to Point Marion

The Paddle begins at Point Marion where Borough officials and the local outfitter will discuss the community park, public amenities which reflect the Borough’s commitment to outdoor recreation.

There is parking at the Point Marion Community Park where registration will be located and the paddle will begin. The paddle will end in Greensboro, so if you are using your own kayak or canoe, you must make arrangements for shuttling back to your vehicle.

If you are renting a kayak or canoe from Mon River Recreation (Vicky Evans, our host) you will be shuttled back to your vehicle.

Experienced paddlers will accompany you on the trip.

The Morgantown Area Paddlers’ organizer, Mary Wimmer will speak to how the 200 plus paddling group launched and their successes to date.

Also along the trip we will stop near the Albert Gallatin home, Friendship Hill National Historic site and although we will not be able to visit the site (located over 1 mile from the river access) the paddlers will hear a bit about the history of Gallatin and the historic significance of this National Historic Landmark.

At the paddle closes in Greensboro, paddlers will be welcomed by community representatives and members of the Nathaneal Greene Historical Association and invited to visit the historic Nathaneal Greene log cabin. The borough is also expected to be hosting its annual Arts Blast festival along the riverfront on this date.

Things to Do in Point Marion, PA.

Nestled at the confluence of the Monongahela and Cheat Rivers on the southern border of the Keystone State, Point Marion welcomes visitors looking for good food, outdoor recreation, and a bit of American history.

Start off with a big breakfast and friendly service at the family-owned and operated River Side Diner at 120 Penn Street. Then head three and a half miles north on Route 166 to Friendship Hill National Historic Site. This 661 acre park was once home to Albert Gallatin, the longest serving United States Secretary of the Treasury. Under Presidents Jefferson and Madison, he was responsible for financing the Lewis and Clark expedition and was father of the National Road. Open 9 to 5 from April 1 through October 31, the Gallatin mansion features an informative visitor center, a self-guided audio tour, and a short video presentation. Allow an hour to tour the house, and then explore the ten miles of lovely trails that wind through the grounds and down to the Monongahela. A picnic area and comfort station are adjacent to the parking lot. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset year round.

On your way back into Point Marion, make a stop at Shop ‘N Save Express, 1 North Main Street, and fill your cooler with snacks and drinks. Drive south on Main Street to Point Marion Community Park, a well maintained green space on the banks of the Mon. Park amenities include a children’s playground, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, picnic pavilions, barbeque grills, and a boat ramp. Visitors can fish from the docks or along the shoreline.

Point Marion Park is a great place to relax and enjoy your snacks before launching your kayak, canoe, or boat. (Reminder: A boat registration or use permit is needed.) Paddlers should head downstream, bearing left at the confluence of the two rivers. Six miles of leisurely boating will bring you to the village of Greensboro. Exit here at the access area and have a picnic at the gazebo. Pack up and return to Point Marion before the sun sets. Should you be hungry upon return to Point Marion, you can stop at Subway on Main Street. Sporty’s and Connie’s are two excellent pizzaria’s, both located at the north end of Penn Street.

As you head for home take Route 88 across the Greene County bridge and drive 15 miles to Carmichaels, where you can catch a flick at the Skyview Drive-In. Open only on the weekends, this is an old-fashioned way to end your visit to Point Marion.
