Flag Retirement Ceremony

June 14, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

This event will take place on Thursday, June 14th at the Carmichaels American Legion, Post #400, and will begin at Dusk (approx 7:30pm). Scouts should wear their Class A Uniforms. This event is for anyone that would like to attend.

When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be “retired” with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag into a fire. The fire used must not be one used for any other purposes, only for use in flag retirement.

The Scouts maintain a vigil over the fire until all traces of the flag remnants are destroyed. Then, the fire is extinguished and the ashes are buried. The burial can be completed with a moment of silence while taps is played by a bugler.
